Main panel being readied for vacuum Closed mould
Getting ready to vacuum one half of a main panel, stretching over the bagging material. The mould is sprayed with paint, then the plies of glass and/or carbon cloth are laid up. Next the balsa of the sandwich is added and finally another layer of glass cloth to complete the sandwich. When the two halves of the panel are completed, the mould is joined. This is usually done using a mixture of glass microballoons and epoxy resin. Here you can clearly see the holes for the joining bolts and the cross-wise aluminium stiffeners. All of this is a relativley simple technology.
Vacuum outlet Servo shroud moulds
Attention to detail is important. On the left is a shot of the vacuum outlet and on the right are the moulds for the wing servo shrouds - my guess is that the last model was pink in colour!
Close-up fuselage Fuselage mould
Well - here's a surprise for some of you - the fuselage is also partly of sandwich construction and not solid flibreglass. Here you see one half trimmed in its mould. This technique enables the fuse to be really quite light. It is more work but worth it. Each model takes around 35 man-hours to make.
